And today I officially became a candidate!
How do you become a candidate?
Well you need to submit a series of forms to your local elections office-for me Rother District Council. You need 10 people who are registered to vote in your constituency to nominate you and a £500 deposit!
Healthy checks and balances in a democracy-if you can't manage to pass these relatively small hurdles you are unlikely to be able to persuade tens of thousands of people to vote for you by election day.
You also need to be:
- at least 18 years old and
- a British citizen or
- a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or
- a citizen of a commonwealth country who does not require leave to enter or remain in the UK, or has indefinite leave to remain in the UK
