NORTHEYE ASYLUM DETENTION CENTRE
I will always be willing to stand up for my constituents if the Government get things wrong. The plans for the Northeye Asylum Detention Centre are not the right ones for Bexhill. I will do my best to get the Home Office to reconsider. As an MP, you don't win on every issue but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Credit is due to those who have campaigned on this issue to date and I would always be willing to work with others to present a united front.
The Home Office is planning for a centre to accommodate around 1200 migrants, mainly single males who have arrived on small boats. There were initially plans to allow those detained there to come and go as they pleased. Whilst I understand the Home Office has agreed to a detention only centre, we cannot say that a Labour Government would stick to this plan.
I do not believe that this would have any kind of positive impact on the people and community of Bexhill or that our local services are setup to manage any consequences. Northeye is on a quiet residential road and Bexhill does not have the necessary services & infrastructure.
I will do whatever I can to try and reverse the Home Office plans to make use of the site and support the local community to ensure we are not negatively impacted by if we aren't successful. If you live nearby and want to share your concerns with me message me on Facebook or email [email protected]
